Occupational Therapy

At VA&A, occupational therapists (OT) work alongside orientation and mobility instructors to ensure our clients homes are safe, appropriately equipped, and easy to navigate. Our OTs conduct two major assessments for clients of all ages and vision levels. These assessment reports can then be submitted to NDIS as/when necessary.

Home Modification Assessments

As vision changes, your set-up at home may require modification. Following a home modification assessment, your OT will recommend adjustments to ensure you can safely and independently navigate your home. These recommendations may be as simple as adjusting lighting or using high contrast tape to highlight potential hazards, to more advanced solutions such as ramp installation. The OT will ensure all modifications are appropriate to your specific needs.

Functional Capacity Assessments

For a functional capacity assessment, the OT will assess how your body is affected by vision loss. This is done through a combination of observation and questionnaires. The OT is then able to give you a thorough and comprehensive report recommending additional services that will enhance your day-to-day life. Recommendations may include a range of different services such as physiotherapy, or speech therapy.

Training Programs

Once assessments are completed, our OT will design and implement a training program appropriate to your needs and goals. Our programs are suitable for all ages and vision levels, including paediatric services. For our youngest clients, the OT can include developmental goals, fine motor skills, hand-eye coordination, self-care, school readiness and social skill development. Our service is appropriate no matter your age or OT needs due to vision loss.
